# Device Profiles & Groups

**Who this is for:** Administrators defining re-authentication policy and operational groupings for devices.

**What you'll accomplish:** Create a Device Profile (the re-authentication policy devices inherit) and a Device Group (for bulk operations).

### Device Profiles

A **Device Profile** is the re-authentication policy a device inherits on enrollment. It has two key parameters:

- **`auth_frequency`**: how often the device is periodically re-authenticated.
- **`max_failed_auth_attempts`**: failures beyond this mark the device inactive.

These are the same parameters that drive the device status machine (see [*Device & Token Lifecycles*](https://portal.sandgrain.eu/knowledge-base/device-token-lifecycles?hsLang=en)).

1. Navigate to the **Device Profile** page from the sidebar.
2. Click **Create Profile**.
3. Enter the details and click **create**.

Required fields: profile name, `auth_frequency`, and `max_failed_auth_attempts`.

### Device Groups

A **Device Group** is an operational grouping of devices (for example, per site or per batch), used for bulk operations such as bulk import (`group_id` in the JSON manifest) and lifecycle actions.

1. Navigate to the **Device Group** page from the sidebar.
2. Click **Add Device Group**.
3. Enter the details and click **Add Devices Group**.

The only required field is the group name; devices can be assigned at creation or later.
